de Brasília, Distrito Federal, sete canteiros preparados em uma
manhã sobre solo argiloso, duro, seco e compactado. Depois de
prontos, os canteiros devem ser mantidos cobertos com palha (mulch)
para proteger o solo e a umidade.
A rototiller is very useful to

A
roçadeira costal é outro equipamento indispensável
para dinamizar projetos de hortas urbanas, ajudando a cortar capim,
grama e mato para iniciar uma horta, ou para usar como cobertura dos
canteiros (mulch) ou para pôr no composto. Acima, na
Invasão (favela) da Estrutural, em Brasília, a roçadeira
foi usada para capinar rapidamente o local da futura horta.
The brushcutter is another tool
very important to empower and speed up every project of urban agriculture,
helping us quickly cut grass and weeds to be used as mulch or to be
put into and over the compost pile. Above, in a slum in Brasilia, the
brushcutter was used to cut the weeds from the area of the future garden.

Materiais orgânicos
facilmente disponíveis nas cidades são a matéria
prima principal do composto que irá se transformar em
húmus, o fertilizante ideal para as hortas.
Organic materials easily available in the cities
are the main component of the compost, which will transform
into humus, the best fertilizer for the gardens.
Nas
fotos ao lado e acima, o lixo orgânico está visível
apenas para fazer a foto. No composto, o lixo nunca fica visível,
pois logo que é depositado no monte ele é coberto com
palha, ou com folhas, capim, ou mato capinado.
In the pictures shown in the left and above, the organic garbage is
visible only to take the photos. In the compost, the garbage is never
seen, because as soon it is put over the pile, it is covered with straw
or dry weeds and leaves. |

Muita
gente acha que é possível usar o adubo feito de
lixo, pelo Serviço de Limpeza Urbana, como composto em
hortas domésticas, comunitárias e escolares. As fotos acima
mostram que além de horrível, esse adubo pode trazer tantos
objetos estranhos que é perigoso manejá-lo. Certamente é
preciso compostar o lixo orgânico urbano, e transformá-lo
em adubo, mas todo o processo deve ser melhorado para que o produto não
torne o trabalho agrícola cada vez mais arriscado. O adubo feito
de lixo deve ser usado antes em silvicultura, reflorestamento, produção
de frutas etc, do que em hortas.
Many people think that it is possible to use the
fertilizer made from garbage, by the Municipal Cleaning
Department. The pictures above show that besides awful, this fertilizer
can bring a lot of cutting pieces that make dangerous to handle it. Surely
it is mandatory to compost the urban organic garbage, but the whole process
must be improved, so its product will not make the farm labor an activity
increasingly risky. The fertilizer from garbage should be used first in
forestry and fruit production than in vegetable gardens. |

Mulching the beds with straw saves
water and the work to irrigate, avoids weeds and the soil hardening, and
feeds the earthworms and the utile microorganisms in the soil. The beds
just become temporarily uncovered when the seeds are sprouting and while

importante que toda a comunidade perceba que alguma coisa diferente
está acontecendo, e que todos podem participar e melhorar de
vida. Para tanto, o uso de placas com informações diretas

It is very important that the entire community
perceives that something different is happening, and everybody is invited
to join and improve his or her life. For this, the use of sign plates

A horta
na "Casa Aberta dos Meninos e Meninas de Rua"
de Brasília deu aos jovens oportunidade de aprenderem a trabalhar
juntos, a terem orgulho do que faziam, e a gerarem renda vendendo os produtos.
The garden at the "Open House for the
Street Boys and Girls" of Brasilia gave the youth an opportunity
to learn to work together, to be proud of what they were doing, and to
generate income by selling the products. |

Os meninos gostaram
tanto da sua horta que espontaneamente a protegeram com uma grande cerca
de bambu, que levou muitos dias para ficar pronta.
The
kids liked their garden so much that spontaneously protected it with
a big bamboo fence, which took many days to be built.

produzindo continuamente mudinhas em bandejas e economizando espaço
nos canteiros.
The bamboo and plastic film greenhouse makes the garden more dynamic,

With the continuous use of compost and mulch,
the soil changed from clayish and compacted, to hummus rich and well

Vender
as hortaliças, com ajuda de voluntários, e usar o dinheiro
para comprar uma bicicleta, abrir uma poupança no banco ou entregar
para a mãe só foi possível até o governo do
Distrito Federal (administração Cristovam Buarque) proibir
a feirinha dos Meninos e Meninas de Rua. Com a proibição,
a frustração dos jovens (e dos voluntários) foi tão
completa que até a horta foi abandonada.
To sell the vegetables (with a little help from
volunteers), and to use the money to buy a bike, to open a saving account
in the bank, or to give it to their mothers, only was possible, for the
kids, before the government of Brasilia decided to close the little fair
where the street boys and girls were selling their produce. Without being
able to sell their produce anymore, the kids' (and volunteers') frustration
was so complete that even the garden has ended. |

Em Brasília,
as escolas têm grandes áreas abertas onde poderiam implantar
hortas, mas poucas o fazem, e menos ainda o fazem adequadamente. Em
1993, no GISNO, um famoso ginásio público na Asa Norte,
em uma enorme área cercada reservada para a "horta escolar",
havia apenas esses três canteiros baldios, e o mato dominava todo
o espaço, e nada era produzido.
In Brasilia, the schools usually have large open
areas where they could cultivate vegetable gardens, but few do it, and
less yet do it properly. In 1993, in a famous high school in Brasilia,
in a huge area reserved for the "school garden", there were
only these three empty beds, weeds dominated the space, and nothing
was produced. |
Em 1993, um grupo
de voluntários do Comitê Brasília da "Ação
da Cidadania contra a Fome e a Miséria" solicitou à
direção do GISNO autorização para implantar
lá uma horta escolar modelo. Em poucos meses, a horta era a grande
novidade educacional da escola.
In 1993, a group of volunteers from the Brasilia
chapter of the "Citizen Action against Hunger and Misery" asked
the school's authorization to start a "model school garden".
After few months, the garden was the great educational news in the school. |

Trabalhar em uma
horta é uma oportunidade para os jovens tomarem contato com uma
atividade produtiva, real, natural, significativa, coisa rara em suas
vidas cada vez mais virtuais, simbólicas e em vão.
To work in a garden is an opportunity for the youth
to get in touch with a productive, real, natural, meaningful activity,
something very rare in their lives, increasingly virtual, symbolic, commercial
and in vain. |
Os professores e
pais de alunos podiam comprar hortaliças duas vezes por semana,
de manhã ou de tarde. Eles podiam escolher as plantas e colhê-las
do chão, em "tempo real".
The teachers and the students' parents could buy
vegetables two days in the week, morning and afternoon. They could choose
the plants and pick them up from the soil, in "real time". |

horta baseada em pequenos módulos quadrados permite o plantio
de hortaliças na medida certa do consumo doméstico.
The "square foot" gardening method allows
the cultivation of vegetables according the actual needs of the domestic
consumption.
