O hospital ocupa uma imensa área, com prédios antigos e mais modernos. Os grandes banners na entrada informam que ali há várias atividades ligadas à alimentação e à natureza. O banner central informa: Hortas terapêuticas, sociais e pedagógicas.	The hospital ocuppies an immense área, with old and more modern buildings. The big banners at the entrance inform that there are various activities related to food and nature. The central banner informs: Therapeutic, social and pedagogical gardens.
Abaixo, visão geral da horta, dividida em 224 parcelas medindo 5 por 6 metros cada uma. As parcelas são separadas por cordas, e cada uma tem um ou dois composteiros de plástico. São portanto mais de 300 composteiros na área, que mede cerca de 1 hectare.	Below, overview of the garden, divided into 224 lots measuring 5 by 6 meters each. The parcels are separated by ropes, and each plot has one or two plastic composters. There are more than 300 composters in the area, which measures about 1 hectare.
Acima, a falta de cobertura morta (mulch) protegendo o solo dos lotes é bem notável, ainda mais em tempos de aquecimento global e crise hídrica. Abaixo, os composteiros plásticos são totalmente fechados. Eles têm apenas a tampa e uma porta embaixo para retirada do material compostado. Esse modelo é adequado para regiões frias no norte da Europa (onde são fabricados). Em Portugal, com o clima cada vez mais quente, eles poderiam ser mais arejados, facilitando a decomposição dos materiais orgânicos. Á direita, estrume animal também é usado em alguns lotes.	Above, the lack of mulch protecting the soil1s moisture and life from the hot sun is quite remarkable, especially in times of global warming and water crisis. Below, the plastic composters are fully enclosed. They have only the cover and a bottom door for removal of the composted material. This model is suitable for cold regions in northern Europe (where they are manufactured). In Portugal, with the hotter weather, they could be more aerated, facilitating the decomposition of organic materials. Below, on the right, animal dung (horse) is also used in some parcels.
Abaixo, COMPOSTAGEM COMUNITÁRIA Essa maneira de compostar grandes volumes de materiais orgânicos é pouco prática, pois dificulta o uso dos materiais incluídos há mais tempo, já prontos para usar, que ficam cobertos por materiais incluídos há menos tempo, ainda não decompostos. O ideal é separar os materiais em várias pilhas, de modo que cada uma tenha materiais incluídos numa mesma época, formando um composto mais homogêneo e pronto para uso todo de uma vez. Por favor, vejam aqui três exemplos. Outro problema é a carência de materiais nitrogenados diante de tantos materiais ricos em carbono (a palha).
